California: U.S. Supreme Court upholds disclosure of backers of same-sex marriage ban

The U.S. Supreme Court  rejected an attempt to exempt an organization promoting a California proposition banning same-sex marriage from disclosing the names of their contributors. The backers of Proposition 8, the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), claimed that revealing the names would subject them to threats, hate mail and acts of violence. The Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals noted in their earlier decision upholding disclosure that the names had already been available since 2008. The U.S. Supreme Court denied an appeal in 2012 of a Maine ruling for disclosure of names of those backing a NOW campaign to overturn Maine’s marriage equality law. NOW also lost fights against disclosure in Rhode Island, Minnesota and Washington. (Advocate, March 2, 2015, by Trudy Ring)
