Reporters Committee hires litigation director in free press struggle

The  Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press is launching an aggressive campaign in defense of journalists, for the first time hiring a legal director to bring lawsuits across the U.S. The RCFP is expected to focus on the right of journalists “to monitor government activities.” The move is seen as helping to fill a void as there has been a recent dropoff in cases over access and freedom of information. As their litigation director, RCFP hired Katie Townsend, a Los Angeles media lawyer with experience in First Amendment litigation including prior restraint, compelled speech, libel and access to judicial records and proceedings. RCFP also hired five new lawyers to begin fellowships devoted to press freedom and the rights of individual journalists. (Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, September 5, 2014, press release)

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to help the Reporters Committee continue its strong tradition of ensuring that the First Amendment rights of the press and the public are being safeguarded through our court system,” she said. “The digital world has posed new challenges to press freedom that, now more than ever, make the work of the Reporters Committee critical. I could not be more excited to be a part of that work.” – See more at: http://www.rcfp.org/townsend-joins-reporters-committee-litigation-director#sthash.bbAyEvcT.dpuf
