Government critics rankled by free speech zone established for Nevada ranch protest

Citizens turning out in support of a rancher’s refusal to pay 20-year’s worth of grazing fees to the federal government were incensed to find that they were restricted to a free speech zone. They and free speech advocates consider the zones “an inappropriate infringement of free speech.” (Las Vegas Review-Journal, April 17, 2014, by Sean Whaley)

The Bureau of Land Management soon backed down as the protesters set up outside the designated free speech zone.  (21St Century Wire, April 11, 2014, by 21WIRE)

The Minority Report editorialized, April 15, 2014, that the free speech zones are used to control and limit protests. It quoted a Bundy rancher’s son, “Whenever you designate an area [for free speech] you are restricting it everywhere else.”

A. Wilson of Daily Kos, April 16, 2014, notes that conservatives and Tea Party members lamenting the outrage of free speech zone on the Bundy Ranch in Nevada should look to the administration of George W. Bush for the advent of the zones.

  • Sorry A.Wilson of daily Kos,the Nixon administration is responsible for original legislation to curb our Freedom of Speech. Alhough Expanded under Bush and Obama, congress had the final say, with a total of 4 congressmen voting against it…That is 4 out of over 300 elected officials who know he difference between right and wrong. What we Citizens need is a “Government exclusion zone” and it needs to be set up around OUR Constitution!
